Couple Visits Grandma in Nursing Home on Wedding Day | Lincoln, Nebraska

KYLE + KELSEY

The moment my second shooter, Kara, and I walked through the door of the salon where the bridal party was getting ready, Kelsey embraced us and made us feel so welcome. She made it clear she and Kyle wanted us to enjoy the day as we documented it - to eat and drink and take time to get to know their family and friends. I am so stinking grateful to have clients like this!

Later that morning, Kelsey let me know there was going to be a slight change in the timeline. She went on to explain that after the ceremony, she and Kyle wanted to stop and make a special visit. Kyle's grandmother wasn't going to be able to make it to the ceremony and they wanted to make time to spend with her. My first thought was, "well this is going to be a tear jerker." I wasn't wrong.

We pulled into the living community and the newlyweds entered the building, hand in hand. A nurse brought Kyle's grandma out to visit, and although she didn't recognize them right away, she quickly began beaming ear to ear as they talked about how they just got married. She loved looking at Kelsey's flowers and soon other members of the family joined them. Before they parted ways, she gave Kyle one word of advice: don't have TOO much fun! It was one of the best wedding moments I have ever photographed. And you can bet I still tear up every time I look through these images.

My grandmother, she has dementia.

Sister of the groom, Kimberly, shares her memory of these sweet moments they spent with their grandmother on her brother's wedding day.

There is a story behind the first photo of all three of us kneeling next to my grandmother: she has dementia, and knows our names but has not recognized us in a while. We knelt down and reminded her who we were and told her that Kyle and Kelsey got married today. After the wedding, we came to see her so she could see them on their big day. After a pause, she looked at me, and then at Kyle, and exclaimed, "Kimberly? Kyle? Is that you?" With a tear in her eye, she asked us, "When did you two grow up? You are so big! Kyle got married today, that's so wonderful!"
